Discovering MOXO
In Hong Kong, pediatricians and psychiatrists primarily diagnose ADHD through comprehensive clinical assessments. However, many clinicians also utilize supplementary diagnostic tools to enhance the accuracy of their evaluations. Among these tools, MOXO has gained prominence for its ability to provide additional diagnostic confidence. When deciding on the ideal assessment tool, the clinicians we interviewed praised MOXO for offering a cost-effective and objective method to quantify childrens’ attention levels.
As we adopted MOXO to support our programs, we quickly learned how it can generate valuable benchmarks, allowing for precise comparisons with same-aged peers and contributing to more informed diagnoses.
Educational Impact
Recent Hong Kong government-commissioned surveys have identified attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and depression as the most prevalent mental health condition among primary and secondary students. In response, Hong Kong has been implementing innovative educational approaches, particularly for students with special educational needs (SEN). At the heart of our values here at BrainX, we aim to recognize the uniqueness of every child by understanding their full attentional profile and supporting them in their journey to unleash their full potential.
MOXO has been supporting us on our mission through its innovative technology, which enables early identification of student attentiveness issues. It also serves as an accurate and effective tool for measuring their attentive states and progress over time, demonstrating the effectiveness of interventions imposed. MOXO allows our training institution to understand the baseline of individual learners and customize their neurocognitive training programs to each learner’s unique characteristics and abilities. MOXO also allows for real-time progress tracking and optimization of executive function training curricula with an objective, quantifiable assessment of individual performance throughout the program.
MOXO has been gaining traction within Hong Kong’s public primary education system, where its implementation addresses diverse learning needs within unified classroom environments. Introducing MOXO into classrooms gives teachers a never-before-seen glimpse into each child’s attention capabilities and, if addressed, can enhance teaching effectiveness and learning outcomes. As a pioneering force in Attention-Informed Education, MOXO is laying the groundwork for transformative academic advancement across institutions.
University Research Collaboration & Recognition
In June 2023, BrainX and the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) Institute of Special Needs and Inclusive Education (ISNIE) presented findings from a 20-week research study measuring intervention efficacy for students with ADHD. A selected group of students underwent intensive neurocognitive training offered by BrainX during the research period. The students received two weekly training sessions for the 20-week period (40 sessions).
MOXO was one of the key assessment tools used and served two significant purposes in the research:
- Identifying the severity level of attentive deficiency of the students at the entrance phase of the research.
- Measuring the students’ improvement at the program’s midpoint (i.e. after 10 weeks) and at the end of the interventions.
The study demonstrated the effectiveness of the intervention in improving attention, emotional regulation, and executive function among children diagnosed with ADHD in Hong Kong.
In October 2023, BrainX received the EdTech Heroes Award (K12 Track) at the Asia Education Summit, organized by Esperanza and ISTE. This recognition acknowledges our important work and MOXO’s innovative contribution to educational technology and its potential to transform attention assessment and personalized learning.
Future Plans
Eileen and her team at BrainX will continue to develop and provide scientifically proven training programs for learners of all ages and backgrounds. Their work contributes to the broader goal of leveraging technology to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed for success in the digital age. As an integral part of this mission, BrainX plans to expand the use of MOXO in educational settings across Hong Kong and potentially beyond. The organization aims to further integrate MOXO Profiler insights on individual learners’ cognitive performance to create and integrate adaptive and effective personalized learning programs into curriculum development and personalized learning strategies within BrainX and in schools we work with.
The future of attention-informed education in Hong Kong looks promising, with MOXO playing a crucial role. BrainX envisions using MOXO data to create more sophisticated, AI-driven learning platforms that can adapt to students’ attention patterns in real-time. Additionally, there are plans to conduct longitudinal studies using MOXO assessments to track students’ attention development over time, providing valuable data for educators and researchers.
